The Gauteng health department is investigating allegations that an electric cord and shoelaces were used to tie an 82-year-old woman to a hospital bed for two days.

This comes after pictures were posted on social media of lacerations on the woman's arms, which were allegedly caused when the restraints dug into her skin. 50mm Webbing

Gauteng health department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba described the allegations as disturbing.

"The department has instituted an investigation into the matter to ensure that corrective measures are taken and, where required, relevant officials are held accountable," he said.
